SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Two Morningside women's wrestlers earned pinfalls Thursday during a 35-15 loss to Waldorf in Allee Gym.
Callee Shearer collected the first win by pinfall during the 124-pound match. Shearer earned the win at the 2-minute, 39-second mark, and she held a 2-0 lead before the official slapped his hand on the mat.
"We're happy with how the girls wrestled considering we have a pretty young team," said head coach Jordan Cliff.
At 131, Kelise Cook-Krivohlavek followed with a pin at the 1:58 mark. Before she got the pin, Krivohlavek led 4-0. Krivohlavek got her opponent into a cradle-like position to earn the win.
"It was fun to compete at home, because all my friends were here to watch me," Cook-Krivohlavek said. "I just went into the match wrestling with a clear mind."
Like Shearer, Cook-Krivohlavek knew she had to turn up the intensity to get the five points for her Mustangs.
"I took as many shots as I could," Shearer said. "My opponent took a bad shot, and I capitalized off of that. My mind just went blank at that moment, and let my body take over."
Cliff said that Cook-Krivohlavek and Shearer practice together in the wrestling room, and they take that aggression from daily workouts to meet day.
"They both get after it," Cliff said. "They've been great additions to the roster. They work hard every day, and they're kids who compete whistle-to-whistle."
The final five points the Mustangs earned came from Nevaeh Hast, who earned a win by forfeit at 180. She was honored on Senior Night, as Thursday was the only home dual for the Morningside women.
Elizabeth Rubio also pinned her opponent in exhibition in a 131-pound match.
