KOKOMO, Ind. – It was a battle that nearly went five sets, but ultimately No. 14 IU-Kokomo defeated Receiving Votes Morningside in four sets, 25-17, 26-28, 25-15, 26-24 in the NAIA Opening Round in Kokomo, Indiana Saturday.
It was Morningside's first NAIA Tournament appearance since 2019, and the Mustangs attempted to make the most of it by giving the Cougars all they could handle.
"I cannot say enough how much I appreciate our players' willingness to put themselves out there to get better this year," head coach Jessica Squier said. "Our schedule was so difficult and I'm so proud of how we rallied and came together to fight day in and day out."
After taking an early lead in the opening set, Morningside slowed offensively and the Cougars rallied for an opening set win. The Mustangs responded to adversity well by taking the second set 28-26. The second set was in the favor of IU-Kokomo 24-22. The Mustangs fought off two set points to tie things at 24, and had to fight off a third set point at 25-24 to tie things up at 25. The Mustangs ultimately sealed the win in set two by recording a block by Adelyn Harris and Payten Lode.
After dropping the third set 25-15, Morningside had another chance to force a fifth set, rallying to tie the set at 24 before IU-Kokomo sealed the win and a trip to Sioux City for pool play of the NAIA Tournament.
Sydney Marlow led the Mustang attack with 16 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Claire Wilson added 10 kills and Payten Lode seven kills. Aleksandra Dalach tallied 41 assists and Payton Shoquist 15 digs. Aureana Bernales added 10 digs.
"The most rewarding part of the season for the coaching staff was watching the players bond together over a common goal and ultimately succeed," Squier added. "What a reward for them and their hard work in season, but most importantly in the off season too."
The Mustangs season comes to a close with the loss, but the signs of improvement were evident throughout the year. The Mustangs made the GPAC Tournament for the second time and the NAIA Tournament for the first time under Squier's direction.
"I think this entire year helps the team realize their talent and that they're capable of so much more than they initially believed," Squier said.
