Mustang Women are Headed to the GPAC Championship Match

OMAHA, Neb. – After a quarterfinal round bye in the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament, Morningside advanced to the championship match courtesy of a 4-0 win over Midland. The win, alongside the results on the other side of the bracket, sets up a rematch of last year’s championship match with Concordia.

The win, alongside the results on the other side of the bracket, sets up a rematch of last year's championship match with Concordia.

The Mustangs quickly took the advantage in the match, winning the no. 2 and no. 1 doubles matches to take the doubles point. Lara Heinrich and Helene Kreibich were first in the book with a 6-0 win in the no. 2 match, while Line Jensen and Brooke Marshall followed with a 6-3 victory. Kailee Bailey and Stefany Simplicio held a 5-4 advantage in the no. 3 match when the point was clinched.

In singles, Kreibich was first to report, winning a 6-2, 6-0 match in the no. 4 position. Jensen followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win at no. 1, and Heinrich brought play to a halt with a 6-0, 7-5 win.

Marshall had split her sets when the victory was clinched, falling 2-6 in the first, but coming back 6-2 in the second. Bailey had won her first set 6-0 and was ahead 6-5 in the second, and Simplicio was ahead 5-0 in her first set when it was called.

The Mustangs will face Concordia's Bulldogs on Saturday with a trip to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Women's Tennis National Championship on the line at 1:30 p.m. at Genesis Westroads in Omaha.
