OTTAWA, KAN. – Morningside's women's tennis team split a pair of contests to wrap up this week, falling to Bethel College 4-3 in Newton, Kan. before rebounding with a 5-2 win at Ottawa.
In the loss to Bethel, Sophia Guntren and Lidia Suarez picked up a win in no. 3 doubles, 6-2. Kailee Bailey won her singles match 6-0, 6-2; Stefany Simplicio won 6-3, 6-4; and Lidia Suarez won 6-4, 7-5.
An early start to the Ottawa match provided no adversity for the Mustangs, as a sweep of doubles was started off with a victory via default for Suarez and Guntren. Line Jensen and Brooke Marshall locked down the doubles point with a 6-2 win, and Bailey and Simplicio got a win 6-1.
Suarez and Gunren both got free passes in singles play, too, with Jensen's 6-2, 6-4 win at no. 1 all that was needed to secure the team's victory. Simplicio added an insurance tally with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at no. 4 singles.
Morningside begins conference play a week from Saturday as Hastings is the opponent to kick off the Great Plains Athletic Conference season at the Mason Family Tennis Complex.
