Morningside takes top spot in home opener

In session one, Mustangs Maddy Slaughter, Grace Holzerland, Mackenzie Campbell, and Makenna Laher kicked off the meet with a second place finish of 4:27.58 in the 400-yard medley relay.
For the individual events, Kirstin Verplanke had a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:48.69.
In the fastest event of the evening, the Mustangs had top five placings. Josie Dike came in at 26.59 good for second, Mackenzie Campbell and Makenna Laher had a tie for third place simultaneously touching the wall at 27.10, and Megan Keller touched the wall at 27.77 for fifth place.
Saturday morning began with the Mustangs racking up points in the 1650-yard freestyle with a one, two, three, four sweep. With a time of 20:06.60 Kirstin Verplanke finished first, Amber Westerberg touched in second at 2:58.26, Payton Miller touched third at 21:00.49, and Haley Snawerdt touched fourth at 21:06.49.
Later in the day, Holzerland finished the 100-yard breaststroke in second place with a time of 1:14.39, and Maya McReynolds finished in third at 1:18.83. Holzerland also had a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:43.36.
For the 100-yard freestyle event, Josie Dike placed in the top three, swimming to third place with a time of 57.62.
Concluding the meet Dike, Holzerland, Laher, and Campbell finished with a splash placing second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, touching in with a time of 3:56.96.
The Morningside women's team finished the meet with 613 points, placing them in first nearly 200 points ahead of the competition.
Morningside's swimmers will be back on the road Nov. 19 for the Grace Goblirsch Invitational at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minn.
