SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside's women's soccer team headed into tonight's Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament quarterfinal round match against Mount Marty with a big target on its back. A physical, hard-fought match is exactly what played out under the lights of Elwood Olsen Stadium, as the Lancers toppled the no. 1 seed in the bracket 1-1, advancing 3-2 on penalty kicks.
Goalie play was in the foreground as Moriah Dixson recorded seven saves in 110 minutes of play while Mount Marty had six.
It wasn't until late in the second half, with just under 12 minutes to play, that Morningside got on the scoreboard as Lily Sidel sent a pass downfield to Melissa Tsatiris, who quickly played Mia Stoffel and sent the Mount Marty net fluttering with the game's first score.
The Lancers would launch a close-range assault on the goal with four minutes to play, dropping a header toward the goal, which Dixson dove on, before it was punched back in for the equalizer.
Morningside was first to the penalty spot following a pair of scoreless overtime periods, where Tuva Hammarlund and Emma Feigl had successful attempts, but it wasn't enough as three other Mustang tries were no good.
The Mustangs will stay diligent on the pitch as they await the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics postseason pairings, with the first and second round matches played at campus sites from Nov. 20-22.
