JAMESTOWN, N.D. – A successful 2021 campaign concluded for Morningside University Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Top-seeded and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' No. 22-ranked University of Jamestown broke open a nip-and-tuck Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament semifinal with a quick second-half score as part of two goals in the final 45 minutes. The visiting Mustangs attempted a rally midway through the final frame, but freshman midfielder Ellie Gengler's (Sioux City, Iowa) goal wasn't enough to overcome a 3-1 decision.
Sophomore forward/defender Jil Hellerforth (Luedensheid, Germany) topped the shots chart for head coach Tom Maxon's crew at UJ's Jimmie Turf Field. She attempted two with one on frame. The home side managed just three more tries than Mside (13-10), but midfielder Cassandra Diaz proved the difference with two shots that found the back of the visiting net and added an assist for a five-point night.
Morningside's 2021 season concluded with a 12-6-1 record. It's the third time in the last four years that they've reached 10-or-more victories.
