First-year head coach Nick Wanderscheid's No. 9-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' squad received a stern test from fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference member Dakota Wesleyan University during day one play Thursday, Sept. 2. DWU trailed the perennial power Mustangs by only eight shots (308-316) at the end of play at Fox Run Golf Club. However, Mside flexed its muscles at Hillcrest Golf Club, topping the field by 14 strokes and winding up as the invitational victor (629-651), with the Tigers taking second.
Helping send their new head coach to his first tournament title was the quartet of seniors Laia Badosa (Girona, Spain), Maria Nava (Monterrey, Mexico), and Maria Zorrilla (Torreon, Mexico), and sophomore Sofia Castelan (Queretaro, Mexico). Badosa wound up runner-up in the medalist chase (153); Nava carded a 156 to take third; Zorrilla's 159 placed her fifth, and Castelan's 161 put her in a tie for seventh.
Morningside is back in action Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 8 and 9, at the Siouxland Invitational.
