Early surge highlights narrow Mustang loss

CRETE, Neb. — The Morningside women's basketball team lost a closely-contested game on Saturday, 79-76, to Doane in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
Morningside (11-10, 6-9 GPAC) started the game on a 16-4 run, and scored 10 of those points in the paint. Lily Vollertsen — who led the Mustangs with 21 points — scored four in that stretch, while Clancy Brown had three in the run. That run helped Morningside earn its largest lead of 13 late in the first quarter.
Then, in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs posted 26 points in 53 percent shooting and five made 3-pointers from five different shooters.
Morningside scored 14 points off 16 Doane turnovers, and earned seven second chance points off 11 offensive rebounds. The Mustangs also had 30 points in the paint.
Kinsey Hall scored 12 points and had five rebounds. Jaeden Webb scored 10 points in 23 minutes of playing time.
Brown and Jordyn Carr each had four assists, as the Mustangs had 17 total assists.
The Mustangs now head to Forest City, Iowa, to face Waldorf on Wednesday, then meets Midland at home next Saturday.
