CRETE, Neb. – The Morningside women's basketball team nearly handed Doane its first home loss of the season, but the Tigers edged out a 73-71 win on Saturday.
RV Morningside (8-8. 6-4 GPAC) held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers went on a 19-7 run to ruin the Mustangs' road victory bid.
Three Mustangs scored in double figures in the loss, led by Lily Vollertsen with 22 points. She made eight field goals and all six free throws. Vollertsen also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Chaise Pfanstiel hit five 3-pointers for 15 points during 26 minutes of play. Alexis Spier hit three shots and four free throws, good for 12 points. Spier also had five assists and three steals.
Morningside scored 24 points off the bench and 22 in the paint. The Mustangs also had 11 offensive rebounds, including three from Kinsey Hall and two from Jaeden Webb.
The Mustangs return home with a GPAC doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 11, against Midland.
