Strong second half helps Mustangs upset Chargers
SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A 30-point third quarter helped the Mustangs turn the tables on Briar Cliff in Allee Gym in women's basketball action today, as Morningside went from a 27-20 halftime deficit to a ten-point advantage at the final horn to defeat the no. 18 Chargers 67-57 on Alumni Day.
SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A 30-point third quarter helped the Mustangs turn the tables on Briar Cliff in Allee Gym in women's basketball action today, as Morningside went from a 27-20 halftime deficit to a ten-point advantage at the final horn to defeat the no. 18 Chargers 67-57 on Alumni Day.
The Mustangs shot 51-percent from the floor, including a better than 41-percent outing from beyond the three-point line. Morningside capitalized on 19 BCU turnovers for 16 points, and recorded 30 points in the paint.
Aspen Jansa led the way in scoring for the home team, scoring 18 points including four three-point baskets. McKenna Sims followed with 15 points, Chloe Lofstrom had 11, Sophia Peppers had eight, and Olivia Larsen had seven points. Peppers dished seven assists, followed by Sims, Larsen, and Alexis Spier, who each had two.
The Mustangs out-rebounded the Chargers 36-31, led by Peppers, who had 10. Lofstrom followed with eight boards, split evenly between the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Spier and Sims each had five rebounds, followed by Larsen with three and Lauren Hedlund with two.
Morningside had 11 steals in the contest, with Spier knocking the ball away four times, followed by Peppers, Jansa, and Lily Vollertsen, with two each.
The Mustangs get a chance for some rest this week before playing Jamestown at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 and Hastings on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. Morningside will play host for both games.
