SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Sophomore center Chloe Lofstrom (Armstrong, Iowa) compiled her second double-double of the week, leading No. 8-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Morningside University to a pivotal Great Plains Athletic Conference win Saturday, Feb. 5.
Lofstrom, winding up a memorable four-day span where she averaged 17.5 points and 12 rebounds per appearance, went six-of-11 from the field for 12 points to go with ten boards. She was one of five members of head coach Jamie Sale's squad in double figures. Senior forward Sophia Peppers (Exira, Iowa) wound up with 16 points and was one a rebound short of a double-double; junior guard Makenna Sims (South Sioux City, Neb.) tallied 14 points; and senior guard Sierra Mitchell (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) finished with 12 and an impressive stat line that featured six steals, five assists and a blocked shot. Sophomore guard Alexis Spier (Gretna, Neb.) produced 10 points thanks to a perfect two-for-two outing outside the arc.
Every bit of that game resume was needed to thwart a determined Briar Cliff University crew. The Chargers answered every home team attempt to run away on the Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center scoreboard. BCU held the lead into the final 10 minutes until a decisive 12-0 Mustangs run in the last 3:15 gave home fans a reason to breathe easier due to a 75-69 victory.
Maintaining its three-game lead on the loop standings going into the final two weeks of the regular season, Morningside improved to 21-4 overall and 16-2 in the GPAC. The Mustangs resume a three-game homestand Friday, Feb. 11, hosting the University of Jamestown for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
