SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – A 46-28 second-half roll for Dordt University snapped a 12-game win streak for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics No. 8-ranked Morningside University Wednesday, Feb. 2.
During the evening, Dordt hit on 15-of-24 three-point baskets to wind up the Great Plains Athletic Conference clash as 85-73 victors. Head coach Jamie Sale's Mustangs scored the first seven points inside DeWitt Gymnasium and managed to hold as large as an eight-point first-half advantage. In the second 20 minutes behind a game-deciding 18-1 run midway through the third period, the Defenders answered the bell.
Sale's squad had plenty of positives to reflect upon despite the defeat. Sophomore forward/center Chloe Lofstrom (Armstrong, Iowa) tallied her fifth double-double, posting 23 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) added to her all-time NAIA three-point record, reaching 497 for her career with three makes as part of a 19-point night. The bench managed a pair of solid efforts from sophomore guard Alexis Spier (Gretna, Neb.), who dished out five assists, picked up a steal, and blocked a shot, and senior forward Taylor Rodenburgh (Hawarden, Iowa), who totaled five rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Morningside (20-4 overall, 15-2 GPAC) takes a three-game conference lead over Dordt and Northwestern College into a three-game homestand. They start by welcoming crosstown rival Briar Cliff University for the second edition of the 2021-22 River City Rivals series on Saturday, Feb. 5. Game time is 2 p.m. at Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center.
