SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A 25-5 first quarter roll led Morningside University to a victory in a battle of conference leaders Tuesday, Dec. 28.
The Mustangs, hitting double-digit victories for an eye-opening 20th straight season, didn't allow Grand View University many opportunities early en route to a 79-66 decision. Improving to 10-3, head coach Jamie Sale's squad held as large as a 33-point advantage (63-30) in the second half before the Vikings rallied to as close as 10 in the waning moments.
Mside's balanced scoring resume added another chapter at Briar Cliff University's Newman Flanagan Center. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) led four starters in double digits. She tallied 18 points on five-of-15 overall shooting, including hitting four triples. She was also the victors' assist leader with six dish-offs. Fellow senior guard McKenna Sims (South Sioux City, Neb.) ended with 15 points and also corralled five boards; senior guard Aspen Jansa (Wahoo, Neb.) had a single-game career-high 13 points in a Mside uniform; and senior forward Sophia Peppers (Exira, Iowa) registered a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds to round out the 10-or-more point scorers.
Sale's crew returns to the 2021-22 Great Plains Athletic Conference slate Saturday, Jan. 1. They journey to the University of Jamestown's Harold Newman Center for a 2 p.m. start.
NOTES: It was the eighth win in the last nine meetings against GVU and 20th all-time out of 30 … The clash was a match-up of GPAC and Heart of America leadership. Morningside holds a one-game edge in the Great Plains Athletic, and Grand View is one of two unbeatens in the HOA.
