Valley City State got on the board in the second inning, scratching across an unearned run. Morningside countered with its two runs in the fourth, as Morgan Secora singled to right field and Emma Barwick walked to put a pair of runners on first and second. Amber Dougherty grounded out to third base, advancing Barwick and Ashlyn Caniglia, who pinch ran for Secora, and Paige Schuster singled to center field to score both runners.
The Vikings proceeded to get their final out of the frame, tied the game again, and got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Morgan Secora took the loss in the weekend's opener, striking out seven with two earned runs.
Adeline Fliege took the circle for the Mustangs in the day's second game, picking up her second win of the season while giving up one hit striking out five. The sophomore faced just one more batter than the minimum in the run rule-shortened game.
Morningside scored four runs in the second inning against Mayville and five in the third, as Josie Hernandez, Jenna Skradski, Fleige, Macanna Guritz, Barwick, and Dougherty all scored at least once. Dougherty collected three RBIs, Schuster two, and Jalyn Noelle, Fleige, and Barwick each had one.
The Mustangs are back under the pillowy white sky of the ASB Dome tomorrow, playing no. 23 Saint Xavier at 10 a.m. and Dakota State at 2 p.m.
