Mustangs win national tournament opener
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Morningside University softball team won its first game in the 2025 NAIA softball tournament Monday against Houston-Victoria, 2-1.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Morningside University softball team won its first game in the 2025 NAIA softball tournament Monday against Houston-Victoria, 2-1.
Morgan Secora held the Jaguars to five hits in the win, as she also struck out four and allowed hits. She needed 83 pitches to complete the game, and she hit the strike zone 59 times. Secora won her 15th game of the season.
Paige Schuster sparked the Morningside bats early, as she hit a solo home run in the first inning. Morningside's second run came from a double from senior Ellie Gengler. Lainie Keller scored on the same play due to a Jaguars error.
Morningside (34-17) collected seven hits in Game 1, and Addyson Maxell had two of them.
The win put the Mustangs in the winner's bracket against host Oklahoma City University. The No. 5-ranked Stars shutout the Mustangs, 5-0. OCU held the Mustangs to three hits, all singles from Jalyn Noelle, Keller, and Emma Barwick.
Morningside plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the winner between Houston-Victoria and William Carey (Miss.). Morningside must win to advance to Wednesday's action.
