Mustangs earn sweep to move into second place
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In a cross-town battle with Briar Cliff, Morningside softball swept the Chargers to move into second place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with two games to play.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In a cross-town battle with Briar Cliff, Morningside softball swept the Chargers to move into second place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with two games to play.
The Mustangs earned a 2-1 win in game one and a 2-0 win in game two.
In the opening game, Briar Cliff scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Morningside evened the game with a Morgan Nixon double to score Mykel Ann Gray in the top of the third. In the top of the sixth, Mackenna Sidzyik grounded out, but Liz Hammer came in to score what would be the winning run.
Gray and Nixon both had two hits, each recording a double. Grace Buffington struck out three in seven innings in the win.
In game two, Sydney Petersen got the scoring started with a fielder's choice where everyone was safe and Taylor Richter scored in the third inning. Ellie Cropley added an RBI-single to score Sidzyik in the seventh.
In the circle, Buffington tossed a complete game shutout, allowing two hits.
With the sweep, Morningside sits 15-5 in GPAC play. Midland and Dordt are at 14-6, one game behind the Mustangs. Morningside is at Jamestown Saturday, while Midland faces Northwestern and Dordt faces Concordia. One of those three will earn the No. 2 seed in the GPAC Tournament and will host their side of the conference tournament next week.
