SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Entering Tuesday's slate of softball games, Morningside was in a three-way tie for second place in the GPAC standings. After a split with Midland, the Mustangs and Warriors remain tied for second place with four games to play.
The Mustangs hosted Midland Tuesday afternoon at Jensen Softball Complex, with Morningside taking game one 8-3 and falling in game two 3-1. Both the Mustangs and Warriors are 13-5 in GPAC play, tied with Dordt at that mark. After Dordt's sweep of Briar Cliff Tuesday, the Chargers now trail those three by one game at 12-6.
The Mustangs struck first in game one, as Mackenna Sidzyik reached on an error from the pitcher, but was caught in a rundown between first and second base. While Midland tagged Sidzyik out, Ellie Gengler raced from third to the plate to score the game's first run.
The Mustangs broke the game open in the fourth, as four runs came across home plate. First, it was a sacrifice bunt from Sidzyik that scored the pinch-running Emma Barwick. Vanessa Bohuslavsky drove in a run thanks to an error from Midland, and then scored on a home run from Mykel Ann Gray.
A three-run home run from Midland narrowed the gap, making the score 5-3 in the top of the fifth, but Morningside responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Richter singled to bring in a run and Bohuslavsky hit into a fielder's choice, allowing a run to score.
The Mustangs added an insurance run in the sixth with Kennedee Jones getting caught between first and second trying to steal a base. Midland lost track of the runner at third, Sydney Petersen, and she came in to score.
Gray tallied two hits, including a home run, in the win. Petersen and Richter added two hits each. In the circle, Grace Buffington pitched the complete game, striking out three batters.
Through four innings of game two, the two teams combined for three hits. Midland broke through for the first run of the game on a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
The Warriors added a run in the sixth and seventh innings. Petersen recorded an RBI in the sixth on a ground out that scored Barwick. Bralen Biddlecome tossed the complete game for Morningside.
The Mustangs are set to revive the cross-town rivalry with Briar Cliff Thursday at Briar Cliff.
