No. 23 Mustangs earn two wins at Spire Duals
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — The No. 23-ranked Morningside men’s wrestling team closed strong, scoring 21 of the final 24 points to top Friends 30-18 at the St. Mary-hosted Spire Duals on Saturday.
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — The Morningside men's wrestling team earned two dual victories Saturday in the St. Mary-hosted Spire Duals, scoring 30-plus points in both wins.
Morningside 30, Friends 18
The Morningside men's wrestling team scored 21 of the last 24 points to beat the Eagles.
Christian Ahren put the No. 23-ranked Mustangs on the board at 133 pounds with an 18-0 technical fall at the 6-minute, 19-second mark of the match. Ahren scored 11 points during the third period alone.
Then at 149, NAIA eighth-ranked Caden Eggleston earned a major decision 12-0 victory, and he scored five points during the third period there.
Zander Ernst, the No. 4 wrestler at 165, scored five points for the Mustangs with a 19-3 technical fall in 6:32. Ernst scored 11 third-period points.
Braedyn Rakes got Morningside's lone pinfall in the dual at 174, as the 24th-ranked wrestler earned the six-point win in 2:45.
Mekhi Bovee won 20-9 at 197 over Mekhi Bovee, while Jaxson Boyd ended the dual with a win by forfeit.
Morningside 32, Avila 12
The Mustangs jumped out to a 15-3 lead to set the tone, thanks to a forfeit win by Noah Thorsen, a technical fall from Ahren (19-0, 4:20), and a 12-3 major decision from Eggleston.
At 157, Wiley Hegwer pinned his opponent in 70 seconds, and he also recorded a three-point takedown before the pin.
Ernst got a tech fall win (22-4, 5:09) at 165, followed by a 2-0 victory from Rakes. Boyd ended the dual with a 7-2 victory.
