Morningside knocks off top 15 foe, goes 2-1 at GPAC Duals II

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside University locked up runner-up honors for the Great Plains Athletic Conference duals standings Saturday, Jan. 29.
Head coach Jake Stevenson's Mustangs, improving to 6-2 overall and in conference action, rolled past National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' No. 13-ranked Hastings College 36-15 and Midland University 33-18 to begin their day at The Arena Academy. A lower weight victory march led by junior 125-pounder Evan Shell (Ft. Collins, Colo.), junior 133-pounder Taylor Vasquez (Fountain, Colo.), junior 141-pounder Noah Styskal (David City, Neb.), and junior 149-pounder John Diener (Kaukauna, Wis.) staked the Mustangs out to 18-0 and 24-0 leads in the process.
Diener and Vasquez turned in 3-0 records at day's end. Shell went 2-1, as did Styskal.
Top 10-ranked Doane University stalled Mside's bid to share the regular-season dual crown. The Tigers broke away from a 9-8 deficit through four weights by winning each of the final six weights with three pins, two forfeits, and a decision for a 43-9 triumph.
Morningside is back in action Saturday, Feb. 5. They host the Dave Edmonds Sioux City Open at 9 a.m. at the Hindman-Hobbs Center Fieldhouse.
