However, something he decided on outside of competition during the 2020-21 academic year has changed his post-graduate career options and overall Morningside University experience for the better.
Watson, an intern in the campus' University Engagement office, was looking for a summer internship and had limited choices. Enter the Career Services duo of Stacie (Arens) Hays and Alex Watters, and he found himself applying for and eventually earning one of the coveted Tyson Internship opportunities.
"The entire time I spent with the Food Bank of Siouxland as a Marketing and Social Media intern was tremendous," he said. "I made posts and created a social media strategy and plan for the eight weeks I was there. It also gave me some insight into advertising work as a bonus, as I helped promote the company's summer golf outing."
"Social media is something I've always enjoyed," he added. "It gives me a chance to showcase not only myself but also the team I work with. The Tyson Internship experience allowed me to work on three important areas, too --- adjusting to new social media outlets, paying attention to detail, and enjoying a career. Those things are important every day ensuring I get the most out of the collegiate experience, as they're part of so many things I do."
The benefits of his summer opportunity didn't end at the Foodbank of Siouxland, either. There was also having time near campus to aid his athletic development. "Being with some of the guys and working out enabled me to be more prepared for the 2021-22 season," he noted. "I wanted to make sure that I paid attention to that as getting chances as an undergraduate and wrestling are the two reasons I'm at Morningside. The off-season training got me into a groove."
With so many positives, Watson is enthusiastically in the corner of anyone wanting to take a chance at the Tyson Internship.
"Go for it," he simply stated. "I'd even go further and say apply for a bunch. You never know what might happen --- I didn't limit myself, which led to being able to do this. It's all about talking the talk and walking the walk. You can't do big things unless you try everything."
A wrestler's mentality from beginning to end --- executing for success.
