SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Morningside dropped a straight-set match to Ottawa on Saturday inside Allee Gym, falling 25-22, 25-18, 25-19.
Natan Alves and Ferdinando Vinti led the Morningside offense with nine kills apiece. Vinti hit .375 on 16 swings, while Mohamed Benkrid added six kills. Jaime Alvarez contributed three kills and Edoardo Pirazzo finished with two.
Malu Wilcox paced the offense with 19 assists, while Lucca Stoelinga added 12 as the Mustangs finished with 31 kills on the afternoon.
Defensively, Tucker Juhnke anchored the back row with a team-high 13 digs. The Mustangs totaled 26 digs as a team and also recorded 11 blocks, including two solo blocks and nine assisted stops at the net.
Morningside kept the opening set close and trailed by just three late before Ottawa pulled away for the 25-22 win. The Mustangs again battled early in the third set, trimming the deficit to five points late before the Braves closed out the match to complete the sweep.
