SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside men's volleyball team challenged No. 5 William Penn on Saturday in a Heart of America Conference match, but lost to the Statesmen by set scores of 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22.
Morningside (5-3, 1-2) won the second set with its resilience late. The Mustangs led by as many as six in the set, but the Statesmen scored seven straight points to take the lead. Mohamed Benkrid tied tied it at 25-25 thanks to an assist from Jacob DePauw, then Kirby Schmalz re-claimed the lead with a kill.
Schmalz and Kirby Cox had a block on the clinching point. Cox had four total blocks in the loss.
Natan Alves and Kirby Schmalz both had 13 kills apiece for the Mustangs.
DePauw led the Mustangs with 29 assists, while Gabe Schreck had 10.
Owen Anderson had a team-high 13 digs.
