Singles sweep of Missouri Baptist keeps Mustangs perfect

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Morningside’s unblemished men’s tennis record stayed intact as the Mustangs met Missouri Baptist in Kansas City, playing a neutral site match at the Northland Racquet Club. Morningside lost the doubles point, but came back strong with a sweep of singles play to win 6-1.

Mathys Arnold and Jesse Gerth helped the Mustangs avoid a sweep in doubles, picking up a 6-1 win as the first team in the scorebook.

Marcos Menendez Hervella quickly erased Morningside's deficit with a 6-4, 6-4 singles victory to even the score. Alexis Diaz followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, and Mark Trenkle's match was retired due to opponent injury. Trenkle lost the opening set 4-6 before winning the second 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker, and was tied a 1-1 when it was called. Santiago Minetti clinched the match for Mside with a 6-4, 6-2 victory, giving the Mustangs a 4-1 advantage. 

With Missouri Baptist unable to take the match, play moved to a super tiebreaker format in the interest of concluding the evening earlier. That call came just in time, too, as both the no. 5 and no. 6 matches saw the opening sets split. 

Arnold dropped his first set 5-7 before coming back 6-0 and winning 10-7. Gerth lost a 7-2 tiebreaker to drop his first set 7-6, but came back with a 6-1 second set and a 10-5 super tiebreaker to finish the sweep of singles play.

Morningside plays McPherson College on February 22 at 3 p.m. at the First Serve Tennis Center in South Sioux City, Neb.
