Quartet of Mustangs turn in two Top 10 finishes
The Mustangs’ top finish came in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet of John Spicer, Justin Bay, Pedro Fernandes, and Santiago Vilches swam the race in 1 minute, 24.51 seconds, good for ninth. The fastest split during that race was Spicer leading off at 20.83.
ELKHART, Ind. — The Morningside swim team will come home with multiple Top 15 finishes this week at the NAIA National Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Mustangs' top finish came in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet of John Spicer, Justin Bay, Pedro Fernandes, and Santiago Vilches swam the race in 1 minute, 24.51 seconds, good for ninth. The fastest split during that race was Spicer leading off at 20.83.
Morningside led off the week with a 12th-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as Bay, Fernandes, Spicer, and Vilches clocked a time of 1:32.80.
In the 200 freestyle relay, those four men placed 13th with a time of 3:23.46.
Then, they closed out the week with a 10th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.63.
Individually, Spicer had the highest finish in the 200 freestyle, as he broke a school record in the preliminary heat with a time of 1:40.15. That advanced him to the finals, where he finished 14th overall at 1:40.24. He also ended up in 27th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.01.
Vilches placed 20th in the 100 backstroke, swimming it in 50.96. Fernandes placed in two different individual events: 26th in the 100 butterfly (50.80), and 40th in the 50 freestyle (21.53).
