SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A fast start for Morningside University looked as if it would provide a path to a critical Great Plains Athletic Conference victory Wednesday, Oct. 13.
Crosstown rival Briar Cliff University had other plans on the Elwood Olsen Stadium pitch. A 2-0 advantage for head coach Tom Maxon's Mustangs was brushed aside by a furious visiting side rally with two scores in just over a minute and a half in the latter stages of the second half and, after the home team had seemingly righted the ship with a third goal 14 minutes from the end, BCU answered again with a successful strike as the final minutes of regulation ticked down.
As the crowd continued to stay on the edge of its seats, a first extra session produced chances for both sides with no results. The final overtime looked like it might go scoreless, too, before Briar Cliff picked off an errant pass in front of Morningside's goal and deposited it past junior goalkeeper Bjarne Huth (Bad Vilbel, Germany), who scrambled to knock it away.
The 4-3 defeat, Mside's third extra-session loss in GPAC action, did have some highlights, though. Sophomore midfielder/forward Victor Becker (Amsterdam, Netherlands) produced a four-point night with a goal and two assists. Sophomore forward Gero Zarbo (Berlin, Germany) kept up an impressive run of successive matches with at least one goal, posting the team's first score to up the streak to six straight.
Morningside (8-5, 5-3 GPAC) looks to turn around the midweek misfortune with a trip to Midland University Saturday, Oct. 16. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
