SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside men's golf team made it a home-course sweep this week, capturing the Mustang Derby title at Whispering Creek Golf Course on Tuesday.
The Mustangs fired back-to-back rounds of 292 for a 36-hole total of 584, finishing at 8-over-par — 10 strokes clear of runner-up Iowa Western (594) and well ahead of Northeast Community College (606).
Dylan Welford and Ryan Cavanaugh paced Morningside with matching scores of 145 (+1) to share runner-up honors. Welford shot rounds of 73 and 72, while Cavanaugh opened with a 72 and added a 73 on Day 2.
Darragh McGrath followed in fourth at 146 (+2) after consecutive 73s, and Finn Coull tied for sixth at 148 (+4) with rounds of 74 and 74.
The Mustangs also fielded a "B" team that placed eighth at 622 (+46), led by Ariel Lev's 156 (+12). Conor McBrin carded a 158 (+14), while Tyler Show and Phudit Amornjaturaporn each shot 157 (+13).
The team victory capped a dominant showing for Morningside golf, with both the men's and women's squads winning their home invitational.
