KANSAS CITY, MO. – A pair of two-under-par 69s fueled Morningside University Tuesday, Oct. 19.
Wrapping up a thriving fall section of the 2021-22 campaign, the Mustangs, ranked No. 13 on the recent National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll, scorched The Deuce layout of the National Golf Club course during the final round of the Park University of Missouri's Virginia McCoy Invitational. Head coach Nick Wanderscheid's squad carded a team-low 287 to move from sixth to second on the final leaderboard.
Senior Sam Storey (Sussex, England) and junior Jackson Sitzmann (Sioux City, Iowa) triggered the comeback. Storey wrapped up a meet medalist honor (71-69 – 140) which occurred by six strokes at the expense of the 61-golfer field. Sitzmann, one of many who struggled Monday, Oct. 18, with the main course set-up, took 15 shots off his 84 to end tied for 10th (84-69 – 153). He made the most significant move of any individual, skyrocketing 33 slots from his first-round placing (T-43). Senior Jonny Douglas (Newcastle upon Tyne, England) also jumped 17 spots to tie for 14th (82-73 – 155).
With those efforts going for them, the Mustangs surged from an opening-round 315 to day two 287 and battled eventual champion Bethany College of Kansas to within two strokes (600-602). The runner-up ending closed a two-month span in which Mside won two tournaments, one of which put them ahead at the midway point of the 2021-22 Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships.
