SIOUX CITY, Iowa — After weeks of sharper practices, extra shooting sessions and a young team leaning into its identity, the Morningside men's basketball team finally saw the payoff Wednesday night.
Four players scored in double figures as the Mustangs outlasted No. 16 Northwestern 96-93 in overtime, earning their sixth win of the season and improving to 4-1 in GPAC play. The game featured 23 lead changes, and neither side led by more than nine.
"They found a way to be successful, and they showed some toughness and grit a young team needs to have to win games," head coach Trent Miller said. "Ultimately, I'm proud of how our guys played in overtime and found ways to get it done. I loved how everyone came together. This win reinforces the buy-in that they've shown. You can get rewarded by putting the work in."

Daniel Brocaille, who led the Mustangs with 22 points, hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 62 seconds left in overtime. He credited the team's improved habits for preparing them for moments like that.
"The coaches put us in those situations, and they translate into games," Brocaille said. "When we play good teams like Northwestern, we're able to get through that. We love winning at home."
Morningside's defense followed with two key stops, denying Northwestern on its final two possessions.
The Mustangs outscored the Red Raiders 12-9 in overtime, with Alex Wilcoxson scoring a third of those points. Wilcoxson finished with 19 points and 13 assists, while Caleb Dreckman added 20.
Morningside erased Northwestern's largest lead — nine late in the first half — with a 14-4 run over a five-minute stretch.
Then, in the second half, the Red Raiders also led by seven during the second half. Morningside caught up with its opponent thanks to a 20-10 run, and the Mustangs hit four 3-pointers from Brocaille, Caleb Dreckman and two from freshman Kaden Van Regenmorter. Van Regenmorter scored 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
"For a true freshman to do what he's doing, it's truly astonishing," Brocaille said. "He is a huge asset for this team. When I was a true freshman, I wasn't nearly as poised as he is. He hit dagger after dagger."
Wilcoxson recorded a 19-point, 13-assist double-double. Dreckman also scored 20 points. The Mustangs also scored 52 points in the paint.
"That versatility is one of the things that makes us hard to guard," Miller said. "We have a lot of threats. There are times where we had advantages inside, and we had times where we were catching and shooting."
Morningside returns to action on Dec. 10, traveling across town to face rival Briar Cliff.
