SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Morningside head football coach Steve Ryan wanted to see both sides of the ball execute on Saturday.
On Homecoming, the fourth-ranked Mustangs delivered, rolling past Waldorf 69-6 at Elwood Olsen Stadium. Morningside piled up 651 yards of offense while holding the Warriors scoreless in a dominant performance that secured win No. 4. Most of the damage came in the first half.
"I think the defense played well, especially in the first half," Ryan said on the KMNS-AM postgame show. "Even when we didn't have a good play once, we came back and had a great play. We kept things going and created plays."
The Mustangs' defense limited Waldorf to 175 total yards and just 4-of-16 conversions on third down. Blake Bellamy and Cole Reilly led Morningside with seven tackles apiece, while Cade Harriman added two tackles for loss.
Before halftime, the Mustangs (4-1, 4-0 GPAC) built a 28-point lead behind two rushing and two passing touchdowns. They added 21 points in the second quarter, 13 in the third and seven in the fourth, averaging 9.6 yards per play overall.
Quarterback Zack Chevalier completed his first 12 passes and finished 17-for-18 for 327 yards and five touchdowns — three of them to Drew Sellon. Colin Gordon added a touchdown pass in the second half.
Seven different Mustangs carried the ball, led by Ty Cozad's 74 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts. Max Hough also scored twice, both in the first half.
"We got the chance to get a lot of guys on the field, and get them to show what they can do," Ryan said.
Morningside travels to Mitchell, South Dakota, next Saturday to face Dakota Wesleyan.
