No. 5 Mustangs fall to No. 23 Dordt 28-24
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Mustangs overcame a 21-point deficit to take a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter, but a last second touchdown for Dordt gave the No. 23 Defenders a 28-24 win over No. 5 Morningside Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Mustangs overcame a 21-point deficit to take a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter, but a last second touchdown for Dordt gave the No. 23 Defenders a 28-24 win over No. 5 Morningside Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Defenders scored the first three touchdowns of the game to lead 21-0 with 3:30 to play until halftime. Morningside turned the ball over on their next possession, but Dijion Walls helped the defense out by recording an interception on a pass from Dordt, returning into the red zone and setting up a Lennx Brown to Drew Sellon touchdown pass with six seconds until the half.
The third quarter was quiet until Brown scored on a 4th down rushing play that he exploded for a 58-yard touchdown. That score came with 30 seconds left until the fourth quarter, and it charged up the Mustangs, who scored on a trick play Laken Harnly pass to Joshua Simmons for a 47-yard touchdown and added a field goal with four minutes left to take the 24-21 lead.
Dordt was able to march down the field and score with 30 seconds left. Morningside's last second effort was intercepted and the Mustangs fell to the Defenders.
Zach Chevalier played a large chunk of the snaps at quarterback Saturday, completing 18-of-35 passes for 201 yards and three interceptions. Brown added 69 yards passing and 73 yards rushing. Ryan Cole rushed for 49 yards. Zach Norton totaled seven catches for 91 yards and Sellon had 10 catches for 70 yards.
Defensively, Lonell Boyd Jr. had 13 total tackles and a forced fumble and Dylan Gray had 11 tackles. Malik Hampton had nine tackles, two of which were for a loss. Landry Phipps recovered the fumble forced by Boyd Jr.
Morningside has one regular season game remaining, heading across town to take on Briar Cliff Saturday at 1 p.m.
