SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In a dominant 48-17 win over Midland Saturday, defense and special teams made a difference, leading to Isaac Pingel and Blake Brown winning weekly GPAC awards.
Pingel, a linebacker from Spencer, Iowa, won the GPAC Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts. He tallied 10 total tackles, seven of which were solo, two pass breakups, and an interception that he returned to the end zone for a touchdown. The 53-yard interception return was the final score in the win.
Brown, a wide receiver from Wakefield, Neb., stepped up in a pivotal moment in the first half, recovering a fumble on a kickoff for a touchdown to earn the Special Teams Player of the Week. Morningside had just scored a touchdown to take a 20-10 lead in the second quarter, and on the ensuing kickoff, the Mustangs forced a fumble that Brown picked up and returned for a score to make it 27-10. Brown's score was the first of three defense or special teams touchdowns in the game.
The Mustangs are on the road this week, heading to take on Doane in Crete, Neb. Saturday.
