Mustangs hit halfway point in 2021 fall league action
Morningside University Esports head coach Jared Amundson checked in with an update Thursday, Oct. 7, on the 2021 GG League fall sessions for Valorant, Rocket League, League of Legends, and Overwatch.
Valorant: Though midseason hit, Valorant has yet to get a match victory. We are sitting at 0-4 on the season. Right now, we are trying to find the right combination of five players that click. We have skilled guys on the roster, but we have yet to hit our stride. Our potential is high, but it is going to take a lot of work to reach. All the guys are always hyped for every match week. The highlight player is freshman Harry Laack (Council Bluffs, Iowa), who has stepped into a leadership role. Harry’s raising the bar for all of our players and is honestly making the whole program better.
Rocket League: This group is sitting at 2-2 with wins over Oklahoma State University and Northern Illinois University, and losses to Tarleton State University and the University of Minnesota. Making a push to qualify for playoffs is all that is on everyone's mind right now. We are a momentum-based team, and when we are feeling ourselves, we are borderline unstoppable. We have an awesome group, and as the first four competitions are in the books, I think it's a great foundation to build off of. I see big things in the future for the Rocket League squad.
League of Legends: We’re off to a strong 3-1 start. We have made huge improvements from last year's team in regards to both roster members and teamwork. Freshman Jackson Kasprzak (Salt Lake City, Utah) brings a great deal of leadership and skill. There have been similar leadership roles handled by junior team captain Landon Christensen (Whiting, Iowa), who has helped the team keep their cool under some very tense moments, especially in week one and two matches. We are looking to sweep the rest of the regular season and move into the playoffs, really hitting our stride. Expectations and spirits are running at an all-time high.
Overwatch: Despite taking a hard week three loss to the VESPA Esports team, Overwatch bounced back exceptionally well with a 3-1 win over Bradley University, one of our biggest rivals. That win was much needed, as we were all very down after the VESPA loss. Seeing them rally and put in an outstanding performance the following week was great to see and a character test for us. Since the start of the season, the Overwatch team has had the championship in mind, and right now, I think we are on the right track.
Morningside continues its fall GG League slate Oct. 11-14.
