BELLEVUE, NEB. – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' top-10 ranked Bellevue University needed every bit of a big late stages comeback to hold off a surging Morningside University squad Tuesday, April 12.
The Mustangs, searching for a fourth straight victory, opened up a 5-1 lead through three and a half innings. Freshman outfielder Hunter Jenkins (Bakersfield, Calif.) launched a grand slam in the second, and sophomore infielder Eddie Brancato (Arlington Heights, Ill.) drilled a solo shot in the third.
From that point, the hosts were able to respond with a nine-run comeback over the final six innings to claim a 10-5 non-conference victory. The Bruins' bullpen was the key, limiting head coach Adam Boeve's squad to two hits over the final four frames.
Jenkins wound up the offensive leader with two hits plus the four RBI. Morningside, dipping to 20-12, returns to Great Plains Athletic Conference action Thursday, April 14. First pitch against Dordt University at Mercy One Field and Lewis and Clark Park is 5 p.m.
