JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Sophomore infielder/pitcher Aiden Bishop had a memorable Sunday afternoon, April 10.
Bishop cranked out a pivotal two-run home run in the top of the ninth in game one and then came back with a single-game career-best ten strikeouts in the nightcap to help lift head coach Adam Boeve's Morningside University Mustangs to an 11-9, 6-2 sweep of the University of Jamestown. The two wins resumed a modest three-game win skein and helped Mside move up into a tie for seventh on the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings, trailing Midland University and Dordt University by just one full game in the loss column for a tie for fifth and Briar Cliff University by only game for fourth.
After the Mustangs posted five in the first, the edge-of-your-seat thriller at Jack Brown Stadium was on. Bishop's game one bomb was the difference in an 11-9 back and forth battle. The Jimmies responded with three in the first and second with a single visiting tally in the second for a 6-6 tie. Each side scored in the fourth and sixth to set up the seventh. Freshman third baseman Jacob O'Dell (Northridge, Calif.) launched a home run to start Morningside's final regulation at-bat. After a two-out error kept the inning alive, Bishop got into a pitch for an 11-8 advantage. UJ brought the tying run to the plate in their half, but the comeback was thwarted.
Game two was centerpieced by Bishop's mound effort. He limited the hosts to two runs on four hits with the 10 Ks included. Freshman Jackson Stephen (Cowichan Bay, B.C.) and senior Jordan Kyle (Lake Park, Iowa) proved an effective relief tandem, striking out three while giving up only two hits over the final two innings. It was another close-knit affair with a 1-1 tie going to the sixth before Boeve's bunch plated five runs over the sixth and seventh en route to the 6-2 win.
Senior outfielder Hunter Hope (Sioux City, Iowa) and freshman infielder Alex Calabrese (Omaha, Neb.) topped the nightcap offense. Hope tallied three hits and drove in one, and Calabrese posted two RBI.
The sweep allowed Morningside's tradition-rich program to reach 20 victories for the 14th time in the last 15 seasons. The Mustangs take their 20-13 record into non-conference play at Bellevue University Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
