SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Sophomore Wade Canaday (Marshalltown, Iowa) and junior Elijah Rude (Hudson, Wis.) paved the way for Morningside University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference thriller Saturday, April 2.
Canaday, one of the stalwarts of head coach Adam Boeve's pitching staff, battled Mount Marty starter Jett Hasegawa tooth and nail in the opener. Hasegawa was impressive, surrendering only one run on four hits through five frames. He struck out seven over six innings while being touched for two earned runs on seven hits.
Hasegawa gave a 2-1 advantage to Lancers' bullpen star Dylan Nicholson. After giving up a lead-off single, Nicholson struck out two and was on the verge of unscathed until a pair of errors on a ground ball pushed the tying run across. Enter junior Elijah Rude (Hudson, Wis.). He took the first pitch he saw and drove it over the right-field wall for the eventual game-winning scores in a 4-2 final.
In game two, Mount Marty used an early three-run attack to gain a 5-2 victory. Sophomore second baseman Eddie Brancato (Arlington Heights, Ill.), freshman third baseman Jacob O'Dell (Northridge, Calif.), and junior outfielder Carter Ades (Sioux Falls, S.D.) tallied two hits apiece.
Morningside (17-8 overall, 4-6 GPAC) resumes the set against Mount Marty Sunday, April 3. First pitch for the league twin bill is 1 p.m. at Bob Tereshinski Stadium at Riverside Park.
