SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Only three runs separated Morningside University and Briar Cliff University in their 2022 Great Plains Athletic Conference season lid-lifters Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20.
Despite a string of three successive tough-luck losses for head coach Adam Boeve's Mustangs, silver linings were on the horizon. The theme started with a pair of spectacular starting pitching efforts for Mside at BCU's Bishop Mueller Field Saturday. In game one, junior Wade Canaday (Marshalltown, Iowa) out-dueled Chargers standout Jacob Wesselman, winning 3-2. Canaday shut down a red-hot home team offense averaging better than eight runs and ten hits over its last seven contests to only four safeties while striking out nine. Sophomore Quintin Holman (Nebraska City, Neb.) was just as impressive in game two with ten strikeouts before a late Briar Cliff rally led to a 6-5 extra innings defeat.
Sunday's clash featured the two sides taking advantage of a gusty wind blowing out to left field. Junior catcher Jayson Willers (Council Bluffs, Iowa) belted a grand slam to fuel a comeback to send game one to extra innings before BCU tallied a run in the eighth for an 8-7 decision. The Chargers rolled out to an early 10-0 advantage in the finale. However, Boeve's bunch proved resilient again, posting eight straight runs. Freshman infielder Alex Calabrese continued his hot hand at the plate with a home run, double, and three RBI. Unfortunately, a bases-loaded bottom of the seventh threat was side-stepped by the visitors to take the series with a 10-8 thriller.
Morningside (13-5 overall, 1-3 GPAC) looks to rebound Tuesday, March 22. Mayville State University of the North Star Athletic Association visits for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Mercy One Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
