AUBURNDALE, FLA. – Morningside University moved into double-digit win territory for the 2022 campaign Friday, March 11.
The Mustangs topped Judson University of Illinois 9-5 and Rochester College of Michigan 14-2. Both outings featured offensive outbreaks for head coach Adam Boeve's squad. A five-run sixth inning burst versus Judson was led by freshman infielder Jacob O'Dell (Northridge, Calif.), senior infielder Carter Kratz (Vermillion, S.D.), and sophomore infielder Eddie Brancato (Arlington Heights, Ill.), each drove in runs in the frame. It was more of the same in the nightcap. A nine-run fifth inning was led by three RBI off the bat of senior Braden Smutz (Lake Stevens, Wash.).
Those two blitzkriegs bolstered strong starting pitching. Sophomore Will Bradner (Worthington, Minn.) struck out six while allowing only one run on three hits over five innings against Rochester. Junior Caleb Thomson (Libertyville, Ill.) struck out nine Judson hitters on six innings of work in the opener.
Morningside (11-2) wrapped up their spring break games at the Russ Matt Invitational, taking on Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday, March 12.
