Bio
A 1921 graduate of Morningside, Ervine “Obe” Wenig was a four-sport athlete for the Maroons, competing in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Captain of the 1920 football squad, Wenig starred in the 1919 Morningside contest against Norte Dame played in a snowstorm on Bass Field where he compiled the longest play from scrimmage by either team (a 38-yard run) as the Irish held off the Maroons 14-6.
In his three varsity football seasons, the Inwood, Iowa, native led Morningside to a 16-6 overall record. During the 1919 campaign, he rushed for 306 yards from 25 carries, and one score, and passed for 245 yards more. He served as head basketball coach at Morningside from 1923-1932, and charted an overall record of 54-66.
His 1926 squad captured a North Central Conference title, the first of five NCC basketball crowns captured by Morningside cagers in the 78-year association with the NCC.
