Bio
Elected captain of the baseball team, Carroll Northrup led the 1920 Morningside squad with a.315 batting average. The team’s schedule included contests against Drake, State Teachers College, Simpson, and Ellsworth, and was coached by Jason Saunderson.
He also played football for the Maroons, and starred in the 1917 epic contest versus Notre Dame, where the Irish prevailed 13-0 before 5,000 fans, and the former Mizzou Park in downtown Sioux City. Morningside had 15 first downs compared to Notre Dame’s six, but the Irish scored both touchdowns on intercepted passes. It was also the game where Irish halfback George Gipp suffered a broken ankle. Northrup was also elected as the student body president for the 1921 year.
