Bio
The 1956 Morningside football team recorded one of the best seasons in school history, charting a 6-1-1 overall mark, and capturing the North Central Conference championship, just the school’s third in history, and first solo title since 1923. Led by second-year coach Dewey Halford, the Maroons charted a 4-1-1 league mark, and went 6-1-1 overall. Halford was selected as the NAIA’s National Coach of the Year. Five Maroons were selected All-NCC, including linemen Truman O’Doherty, Buddy Mounts, Tom Tooey, and backs Bob Puff, and Dutch Bryan. O’Doherty was named Little All-American honorable mention, and Mounts named the team’s Most Valuable Player.
