Bio

Les Davis was one of Morningside’s most colorful, notable, and successful athletes, and coaches. Davis played halfback in the 1919 Morningside football game against George Gipp, and Notre Dame, giving the Irish all they wanted before falling 14-6 in front of 5000 fans at Bass Field. The burly 1922 All-North Central Conference back was also a catcher on the Maroons’ baseball squad, and forward on the basketball team. Davis began his coaching career at Webster City, and later became a fixture at Sioux City East as coach, and athletic director.

He is believed to be the only coach in Iowa to win high school championships in three major sports: Football, basketball, and track. Davis also coached football for two seasons (1946-47) at Morningside, and later became a Sioux City radio, and television sports personality. He was also inducted into the Iowa High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
